International Travel in 2010
Now Is The Time To Make Your Plans!
By Kirk Troen, World Projects' Chief Operating Officer
Have you considered traveling with your group to an international destination? Are you afraid that the cost is just too prohibitive for the coming year? Although the economy has had a profound effect on every American, if there is any way you can swing international travel, now is the time!
Several factors to a weak economy lend themselves to the right time to travel. Sagging oil prices, combined with low demand, have sent the cost of airline travel plummeting. Some airfares to Europe, Mexico, Central America and the South Pacific are 40% to 50% lower than just six months ago. Airlines typically do not discount group travel, however, in the past two months we have seen discounts offered to groups that have never been offered before. This can save $200 - $500 per person from the cost of a group tour, depending on the destination.
Hotels are now seeing lower occupancy rates. As with the airlines, the hotel business does not normally discount groups. However, with the very low demand, the hotels are offering incentives and rates not seen since 2002. The world economy has been affected as much as, and in some cases more severely than, the economy in the USA. Inbound international travel has all but slowed to a crawl and we are being offered huge incentives to bring groups to our most common international destinations.
The dollar has regained strength against most foreign currencies and this means lower prices too! Most of the cost of an international tour is based on the local currency. Thus, when the dollar gains strength, the cost of the tour in US dollars is reduced. We’ve seen reductions to the cost of tours in Europe, Mexico, Central America, and Australia of $400 - $500 per person. If ever you were interested in travelling with your group to an international destination, now is the time!
